Welcome Bummis AIO

unspecifiedWhat takes 30 years to make, is manufactured in Canada and takes the cloth diapering world by storm?  The new Bummis AIO Organic One Size cloth diaper!  That’s right, you heard me.  This is the first time in the 30+ year history of Bummis that they have ever created an AIO cloth diaper?  You may think that’s not a big deal, but you’d be wrong.  If you know Bummis, you know they don’t put out a product unless it’ll rock your socks off.  They’ve avoided making an AIO for many many years because they only wanted to make it if it was done perfectly.  So you’ve got to bet that with all that experience they’ve done it well and they’ve done it right.

It’s trim, it washes up super easily; dries uber fast.  It comes with a large pocket to add absorbency where and if you need it and it’s soft and pliable for a comfortable and breathable fit on your tender baby.  But I’ll stop talking now and just show you it’s awesome-ness in the fancy pics below.  Fresh off the sewing machine in trendy new prints and in stock to ship now at Cloth Diaper Kids.com.

All About Blueberry Simplex Cloth Diapers – Features & Review

Have you ever considered adding a Blueberry Simplex cloth diaper to your stash?  Wondering if that higher price tag is really worth it and what’s so great about them anyway?  Let’s explore the features of the Simplex so you will know whether it’s right for you.

First let us say that there are two kinds of Blueberry Simplex diapers.  The Newborn Simplex (6-16lbs) and the One Size Simplex (12-35lbs).

Newborn Blueberry Simplex
The Newborn Simplex is by far our most popular and best selling newborn diaper for a reason.  A tongue style all-in-one, it goes on easily, washes well and dries fast. 8200-S-peri  Complete with umbilical cord snap down it fits tiny babies very well.  It features cotton on the inside and natural fabrics against the bum are an excellent choice when it comes to newborns.  Why?  Because it absorbs very quickly preventing leaks.  Since newborns are often on their backs, sometimes they can’t pee with enough force to make it through a synthetic stay-dry layer like micro-suede or fleece.  The Simplex prevents that problem with the natural cotton interior. The Newborn Simplex also tends to fit babies for longer as far as newborn diapers go.  This means you can get more bang for your buck so to speak and your baby will be able to wear them longer for the investment you put in.  We often have clients that can wear these diapers for up to 3months or more where other newborn diapers will top out around baby’s 8th week (roughly 10lbs).  Certainly the highlight of all the newborn diapers we carry, you will be very pleased to have at least a few of these in your collection.  They are perfect for days out on the town and newborn photo shoots too.  Browse them all here.

But, who should not consider a Newborn Blueberry Simplex?  If you have a history of big babies 10lbs or over, then just jump right to one size diapers.  Or only get a few newborn diapers for photo shoots.  Micro-preemies will also not benefit from these diapers until they are bigger.  Preemie prefolds or LilJoeys are a better option in this circumstance.

One Size Blueberry Simplex
First of all, Blueberry’s products get a thumbs up and gold star for being a mom-invented product, a mom-run company and a high quality diaper made domestically right in the USA.  Right there are three fantastic reasons to choose this brand in general.  But feature wise there’s a lot of reasons to add a One Size Blueberry Simplex to your diaper stash.  Personally, I’m non committal with whether I prefer natural fabric on my kids’ bums or whether I like a stay dry layer.  This diaper calms my bi-polar mania.  A tongue style all-in-one, it is almost identical to it’s tiny Newborn Simplex twin – BUT, one panel of the cotton insert is stay-dry fleece.  So, since the insert is free on one end and attached at the other, you can have cotton on the bum if you stuff the insert in the pocket, or you can have stay-dry fleece on the bum if you simply lay the insert on top.  Two options in one diaper and you can change your mind on a whim.  Here’s a video so you can see what I mean:

Now what else is different about this diaper?  Well it’s called a ‘one size’.  Most one size diapers say they fit from 7 or 8lbs until potty learning.  In reality your average one size diaper begins to fit a baby well around 10lbs regardless of what the tag says.  With Blueberry however, the one size Simplex won’t begin fitting until a full 12lbs.  That’s a big baby right?  Yes it is.  Blueberry One Size Simplex won’t begin to fit your little until about 3 months of age. Why?  Because they want you to buy the Newborn Simplex first of course lol.  So really in all seriousness, this diaper is a great option if you are starting to cloth diaper an older baby.  If you’re intent on beginning with a newborn, look for other options to fill that newborn-3month gap or invest in the Newborn Simplex to start cloth diapering straight from the hospital.  925541_1438549829746435_1942357903_n

Let’s take a minute now to talk poop containment.  See how the legs are sewn on a Blueberry Simplex?  They are turned, but not top-stitched if you want to use the seamstress lingo, so the material lays like this against the leg (see pic on the side).  Hello containment!  This design holds in the messes second only to double gussets such as those found on Rumparooz and Nuggles. Nothing gets by the Simplex, not even the runny stuff.  Seriously, test it out, they’re bullet proof.

The One Size Blueberry Simplex is also trim fitting and fast to dry with a snap down rise for easy size adjustment and snap closures to keep it on your little tyke.  Snaps by the way are better than velcro in my opinion.  Way harder for baby to rip off than velcro if you have a baby who’d rather be a nudist.  The snap down rise is easy to adjust.  Just set it and leave it.  It stays snapped to the setting where you put it even in the wash, so no re-snapping each time you use it.  But yet easy to change on the fly if you’re using the same set of diapers for a smaller baby and a toddler simultaneously (think less packing for the diaper bag with two kids).

8899-monkeys_flat72dpiAnd fit?  Here’s one of my favorite features.  Blueberry prides themselves on having one of the most anatomically-correct diapers available on the market. No sagging, bunching or stuff sticking out. It’s narrow through the crotch.  Great for movers, crawlers and toddlers with quick little legs for less chaffing potential.  And come on tell me that Blueberry does not have some of the best prints in the entire cloth diaper industry.  So cute.  Why wouldn’t you want to color coordinate an outfit with any of these beauties.  Check them all out here.

Aside from the awesome diaper though, Margarita, founder of Blueberry Diapers and mom of four is one impressive lady.  A self proclaimed ‘leading expert in pee-and-poop management’ she has a sense of humor but also a passion for ethical business practices.  Margarita takes seriously the responsibility of making sure Blueberry Diapers are 100% safe for babies. They source their fabrics from the USA whenever possible, use latex-free elastics and ensure all materials are free from any contaminants – guaranteed to be free from lead, pthalates and BPA.  People are on their radar too.  Blueberry offers 100% coverage for all full time employees, and nobody works more than 40 hours a week.  No Chinese sweat shops making these diapers, you can count on that. Practices like these create jobs, ensure the welfare of others and contribute to thriving communities.

All these reasons are why we personally use and love Blueberry Simplex diapers and why we carry them here at Cloth Diaper Kids.  We love them and we’re confident you will too.

Welcome Nuggles! and the Nordica Collection

Do you know what I like more than the diapers I sell?  The owners behind the brands that we carry.  The amazing Moms (and Dads) that design and launch creative diapering solutions for our little ones.  That’s why the newest brand to join Cloth Diaper Kids’ innovative line-up of diapers is Nuggles! Modern Cloth Diapers.10965823_10153051592969804_1222125076_n

Cherelle is the Canadian Mommy Mastermind behind these brilliantly designed diapers.  She’s spunky and dedicated; truly creative with an eye for quality details.  But what really impressed me about Nuggles! is Cherelle’s commitment to manufacturing her diapers ethically.   She ensures clean, safe, responsible, fair-wage manufacturing and is proud to employ women and families in both their overseas facilities and their company operations headquartered in Kamloops, B.C. Canada.

Fabrics used in Nuggles! diapers are also strictly attended to for your baby’s safety and comfort.  Cherelle had this to say when we grilled her on how her diapers are created:86717f_df1d504302a54d038ac6ae0b5e332f15.jpg_srz_p_400_259_75_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz

“It’s important to have the assurance that the fabric and materials we use is produced safely, ethically, and maintains the highest quality. For this reason we have hand-chosen our fabric supplier. We work with an American company who supplies designers and manufacturers across North America. Our supplier owns a small ISO-9000 certified factory in China where they produce the bamboo and bamboo/organic cotton blended fabric used in our bamboo diapers.

We chose this supplier for a few very important reasons: the owners themselves maintain a presence in their factory a minimum of 8 months of the year. The bamboo and cotton yarns they use are certified organic. All of their fabrics have passed class 1 flammable testing and have certification for OEKO testing for harmful chemicals and have passed all lead testing by INTERTEX according to CPSIA. Because they import the majority of the fabric they produce into the US, this testing is up-to-date and fully compliant. Also, we enjoy the ease of working directly with the owners themselves, who understand our high standards. We are really proud to be working with them!”

We want the WHOLE world to cloth diaper, so we’re striving to keep our products SIMPLE. MODERN. GREEN!”

Those are the kind of company values that mesh with our own here at Cloth Diaper Kids and these are the kinds of businesses we want to support.  Even the Nuggles! packaging is minimalistic, SONY DSClocally designed and printed using 100% recyclable materials and plant-based, bio mass inks.

But enough about the nitty gritty.  All of our diapers are ethical choices.  That’s nothing new when you shop with us.  What makes the diapers themselves special?  Well for starters, look at these gussets.  No other diapers on the market have gussets like these.  Great for keeping messes where they’re meant to be.  And the inner bamboo fabric, well that’s super soft.  It’s kind of a plushy, velvety feeling fabric that doesn’t go stiff after lots of washes.  Fit?  Well it was 1602020_273822929440515_71572410_onice and trim on our little man when we tested it ourselves and he’s a skinny minnie.  But, look at this photo (to the left).  It shows how well they fit even really chunky thighs 🙂

Plus look at all those rise snaps.  5 different rise adjustment settings.  Count ’em…there’s really 5.  Lots more than the standard 3 rise setting options seen on most typical one size snap down diapers.  That’s a ton of ways to get a perfect fit.  There’s even crossover snaps on the front for tiny newbornSONY DSC babies who are super skinny.

Want even more options in one diaper?  How about this?  Nuggles!  Can be used as an all-in-two (AI2), or an all-in-one (AIO) or a pocket style diaper.  Say what?  Yep.  You can snap the insert in and leave it like that and never take it off even for washing making it an AIO.  Or you can forget about snapping it all together and just lay the insert on top like an AI2.  Or if you want to, stuff the insert into the pocket opening and it’ll agitate itself out in the wash.  Genius!  And fool-proof for when Dad forgets to pull the liner out of the pocket or when a super poopy diaper makes you not want to pull any insert out of anywhere 😉

But wait.  Baby can’t handle bamboo against the skin?  No problem, they’ve got a snap in stay-dry liner for that.  See?  I told you, they’ve thought of everything.

So, have a look at the adorable colors and prints we’ve got in stock now including the stunning Nordica Collection and consider adding a Nuggles! Simplee Bamboo to your cloth diaper collection today.  (As an added incentive, enjoy 10% off with coupon code: TRYME)

Wet Bag Size Comparisons

Here’s a quick visual of our different wet bag sizes to help you choose which size you need for your stash!

A) FuzziBunz Wet Bag – The smallest of the full size wet bag options, the FuzziBunz Mess Free Hanging Wet Bag has some nifty features.  Handles at the top for hanging off a doorknob and a zipper at the bottom for easy emptying make it simple to use.  It has an open top, but not to worry, smells are not an issue with this bag.  Fitting aprox. 12-20 diapers it’s the perfect size for those who like to wash every day and a half or two.  Not the best choice for lining a traditional diaper pail as it’s meant to hang, but could be used to line a smaller trash can or other container if you choose.

B) Kanga Care Pail Liner – Our largest wet bag by far.  Suitable for lining a traditional diaper pail or the 3-D ‘barrel’ design will allow it to stand alone.  Easily fits 2-3 days worth of diapers.  Drawstring closure fits any pail size, just cinch the drawstring down with the toggle for a snug and exact fit.  Adding to the thoughtful design is a cuff at the top of the liner so when you use it in a pail you will see the fun print or color folded over the top!  This bag is too large for traveling and has no handles but could do double duty as a sleeping bag holder or child/adult laundry bag once the babies are out of diapers.

C) Bummis Large Fabulous Wet Bag – Also an excellent choice for a large in-nursery diaper bag, the Bummis Fabulous Wet Bag in size large is a generous size as well.  Although not quite as large as the Kanga Care Pail Liner, it is wider and also lines a traditional diaper pail very nicely or it has draw strings at the top so it can be hung from any doorknob or change table so it doesn’t take up floor space.  To top it off it is equipped with a zipper closure as well making it very functional in many different ways.

D) Kanga Care Wet Bag – A good mid-size bag.  Featuring a 3-D half-moon design, zippered opening and a top handle with a snap.  Fits 10-15 diapers.  Suitable as a nursery room wet bag for those who wash every day or as an all day outing wet bag if you’re headed out on the town with more than one kid in cloth or is an excellent option for wet clothes after swimming for children or adults.  Perfect for keeping the essentials dry at the beach or splash park so you don’t have to tote around your purse and of course it’s durable and waterproof and washable.

E) Small Wet Bag – This is the size of your typical travel wet bag that you would have in your diaper bag or hung on your stroller or stashed in your car.  Many different brands offer a wet bag of this size: Applecheeks, Thirsties, Sweet Pea, Bummis and bumGenius to name a few. 2692-lowres

And for something a little different in the mid-range size category, Blueberry has some amazing totes with wet/dry capabilities.  Featuring an top zippered pocket for the wet/dirty diapers and a side zippered pocket for dry dipes, it looks and functions like a fashion accessory, but is totally washable and functional too.  Fits up to 8 diapers and has a soft cotton exterior lined on the inside with waterproof fabric.

Baby Break Out – My Poor Little Niece

Does your baby have sensitive skin?  My niece does.  But who knew?  Sensitive skin doesn’t run in our family, she isn’t particularly fair and she doesn’t have any specific allergies that we know of.  But for some reason little Lainey Bug has had raised red itchy patches all over her body since shortly after she was born.  She was constantly wiggling and trying to scratch herself and was a poor sleeper due to discomfort.  Thinking it was eczema, her parents took her to the pediatrician who said, no, it wasn’t eczema, just ‘sensitive skin’ and to stop using all products on her skin.  Then she gave them medicated cream.

Not wanting to use medicated cream unless it proved necessary, they stopped using their highly scented commercial laundry detergent, the hypoallergenic Live Clean Baby Wash and Johnson & Johnson Baby Lotion.  But then they were unsure of how to keep Lainey’s laundry and skin clean and they asked me for help.

I suggested Charlie’s Soap for her laundry.  It’s biodegradeable, non-toxic, cloth diaper safe and great for all skin types (not to mention free of artificial fragrances).  Plus the company has been around for over 100 years.  How’s that for a track-record?  Then I switched them onto the Delish Naturals’ Skin Care Line.  Safe, effective and great for the whole family, Delish Naturals’ products are handmade in small batches right here in Canada so we know exactly what’s in it and time and time again it has shown how great it is for a baby’s skin with nourishing natural ingredients.  Lastly, we made sure she was in cloth diapers – free from carcinogens and plastics and more breathable for her bum.

And what happened you ask?  Well she’s better of course!  The red patches are completely gone, the itchiness has subsided, she no longer squirms and fusses and she started sleeping better.  How long did it take to see a change?  3 days.  Just 3 days.  Sometimes I think we take for granted how delicate the skin of a little human really is.  And even if your baby doesn’t have ‘sensitive skin’ it’s nice to know the products you’re putting on them are the gentlest there are right?

This is why we carry Charlie’s Soap and the Delish Naturals Skin Care Line.  Not because they make us lots of money, not because we get a kick-back from a big multi-national company, but because they’re safe, they’re effective, and they make my niece feel better.

Love you Lainey Bug!

Laineyc
P.S.
Baby wipes (even ‘sensitive’ or ‘hypoallergenic’ ones) are one of the biggest offenders we see for babies that have persistent bum rashes when using cloth diapers.  Delicate baby skin often can’t handle the necessary preservatives they have to put in them to keep them bacteria free.  Cloth wipes and warm water fixes that problem and will save you about $100 a year.

Amber and Hazelwood Teething Necklaces – What’s the Difference and How They Work

Screaming uncomfortable baby?  They’re fed, burped, changed and not sick?  Then it’s a good chance baby is teething.  Baby teeth can move up and down within the gums before breaking through around 6 months of age, so the pain of teething can begin even around 3 months.  A great natural way to deal with teething pain is with an amber or hazelwood necklace.  But what’s the difference? How do they work?  Are they safe? And how do you choose which one might be best for your baby?  Well, here’s the low down:

Baltic Amber Teething NecklacesGold_Cream_Circle4

What Is Baltic Amber?
Baltic Amber is a fossilized tree resin and comes in a variety of shapes and colours. Baltic Amber is made for wearing (not chewing or ingestion). Amber contains succinic acid, a natural analgesic and healing agent. Amber will warm against your body and the succinic acid will be absorbed through your skin helping with pain relief.

Used for centuries, Baltic Amber has been used for a variety of ailments from teething pain to arthritis. Scientific research has shown that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human body. It improves immunity and the balance of acids when absorbed into the bloodstream, it stimulates the thyroid glands to help reduce drooling and soothe inflamed areas. Amber’s anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are recognized by allopathic medicine as a natural analgesic (pain reliever), which can help to relieve many painful conditions.  Both babies and adults can benefit from wearing amber.

What is it made from?
Natural 100% authentic Baltic Amber is used to make the necklaces we carry.  Our necklaces are tested, certified and 100% genuine.  Beware of resin or plastic fakes on the market.

How Does Amber Work?
Amber is associated with sunlight and warmth and reputed to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, accelerates the healing of wounds, reduce inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach infections and respiratory disease. Amber is unique and has amazing results which are all natural. Baltic Amber is a traditional European baby teething remedy, which has become popular all over the world.

Are Amber Necklaces Safe?
As a safety feature there is a knot before and after each bead, so that even in the extremely unlikely event of the string being torn, no beads are lost and there is no risk of choking. Amber necklaces are secured with a traditional screw clasp, not a hook and ring and not a magnetic clasp. But…as with all things, please don’t leave children unattended with their amber necklace or bracelet on.

Does Amber Wear Out?
Your amber will last many lifetimes and can be passed down for use by more than one child without losing effectiveness.  The silk string or elastic will wear out before the beads ever do.  If and when this happens, feel free to restring it or make it into something else fun and beautiful.

What size of Amber necklace does my baby need?
Amber is meant to be worn, not chewed, so choose a size for baby that they cannot get up over the chin and into the mouth.  Generally 11inch for babies 3-6 months and 12-13 inch for babies 6+ months of age.  We recommend measuring baby or trying one on before purchasing.

How Do I Clean My Amber Necklace?
Wipe it with a damp cloth…. simple and effective.

Can you wear amber in the shower, bath or swimming pool?
Absolutely!  The water will help the amber warm up which increases absorbency, thus increasing the effectiveness.  (Gently clean the amber with a damp cloth to remove any chlorine or other film after swimming).

Want to learn more about how the color of amber affects effectiveness?  Whether raw or polished amber is better, how to tell if your amber is real or fake and whether amber needs to be re-charged?  Visit our blog post here: Baltic Amber FACTS vs. MYTHS

Hazelwood Teething Necklaces

What Is Hazelwood?bracelet_turquoise
Hazelwood comes from the branches of Corylus cornuta, a widespread indigenous bush that grows throughout many regions of Canada. Harvesting the twigs doesn’t affect the vitality of the bush, which grows back continuously after pruning.

What is it made from?
Natural 100%, sustainably harvested hazelwood.

How Does Hazelwood Work?
Hazelwood jewelry is an unconventional and very original product.  This wood has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties for centuries, by indigenous people.  Research shows that hazelwood is rich in active compounds which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  Customers’ testimonials show that wearing Pure Hazelwood necklaces/bracelets in contact with the skin can relieve some discomforts that may be related to inflammation such as:

  • joint pains (arthritis, osteoarthritis)
  • digestion disorders (gastric reflux, heartburns, constipation)
  • dental pains (baby teething, tooth decay or cavities) or mouth sores
  • skin disorders (acne, eczema, psoriasis).

In literature, most of these symptoms above are related to acid-base imbalance and/or inflammatory processes.

Are Hazelwood Necklaces Safe?
Similar to amber, hazelwood necklaces are meant to be worn, not chewed.  The clasp used for these necklaces has been carefully chosen for the safety of young children. The resistance of this clasp is weak while that of the wire is strong. So if tension is applied on the necklace (for example, if the necklace gets caught on a thread of the bed cover), the clasp will open but the thread will remain intact thus preventing the beads from falling off in the infant’s bed and reducing chocking hazards. In addition, there are two clamps at each end of the clasp to prevent beads or small parts from breaking free.  Pure Hazelwood, the brand we carry at Cloth Diaper Kids conducted normative testing for “child safety” with an accredited laboratory on the necklaces and its components to ensure the absence of heavy metals and to validate the security system of their products.  * This security is valid only on necklaces changed every 3 months maximum.  So, for maximum clasp safety and maximum effectiveness of the hazelwood itself, replace your hazelwood necklace every 3 months.  Do not allow babies or children to handle or wear the necklace while in a crib, bed or cot or while unattended.  After a while, contact with water, air and movement, will wear out the wire used to make the necklace, which can weaken significantly. Remember to renew the necklace when it shows signs of excessive wear.

Does Hazelwood Wear Out?
Yes, this is the biggest difference between amber and hazelwood.  Amber does not wear out, hazelwood does.  Replace your hazelwood necklace when it shows wear or aprox. every 3-6 months for maximum effectiveness.A9R1816

What size of hazelwood necklace does my baby need?
Amber is meant to be worn, not chewed, so choose a size for baby that they cannot get up over the chin and into the mouth.  Generally 11inch for babies 3-6 months and 12-13 inch for babies 6+ months of age.  We recommend measuring baby or trying one on before purchasing.

Can you wear hazelwood in the shower, bath or swimming pool?
Hazelwood is highly resistant to water (clear water). You can keep the jewelry on in the shower or bath, however, it should be removed if going in the swimming pool.  Chemicals such as chlorine can damage the hazelwood.

So which is better?  Amber or Hazelwood?
The anti-inflammatory properties of amber and hazelwood are different so some babies may do better with one or the other.  Keep in mind that sometimes babies need difference doses, the same way one person might need one Tylenol and another may need two to get relief, some babies wear both amber and hazelwood simultaneously or wear 2 amber or 2 hazelwood to get the relief they need from the pain of teething.  Generally, one necklace of either kind is sufficient.

Find a necklace that will help baby’s pain.  At Cloth Diaper Kids we have used these products on our own children with great results and we carry a large selection off all colors of amber (child & adult sizes) as well as hazelwood.
